The Alberta store is larger but you’ll probably wait there, too. Seating is extremely limited here on Belmont, and you should be prepared to wait in line, perhaps a long time, unless you arrive early in the morning. They still operate there on Saturdays, and now there are two sit-down restaurants. Pine State Biscuits was born as a stand at the Portland Farmers Market a few years ago. Coffee is by Stumptown, the OJ is organic, and the chocolate milk comes from a local chocolatier. There’s even a corn dog made with Otto’s Kitchen andouille. Sides include crispy, real hash browns, black-eyed peas, and over-the-top creamy grits grown in Oregon. Other sandwiches include things like house-made apple butter, fried green tomatoes, and braised collard greens (not on the same sandwich!), and there’s shiitake mushroom gravy for sausage-frowners. The signature Reggie Deluxe fills the biscuit halves with juicy fried chicken, bacon, a fried egg, sausage gravy, and cheese, and it’s as deliriously good to eat as it sounds. You can have yours with some local honey or marionberry jam, and that sounds just fine to us, but we especially love the sandwich extravaganzas. This may have been my favorite place I ate in Portland and we had some of the best meals I've ever had there. The place was packed (at 9AM on a Thursday) and there were so many other dishes I saw that I wished I could try. The biscuit was buttery and fluffy- and those two words don't even go together! The cheese was nothing like the stuff I take out of plastic from my fridge. In the case of Pine State Biscuits, there are no Ifs- they take their time to make the best egg and cheese biscuit you have ever tasted and it's worth every second of the wait. In some cases, wearing my fast paced NYC hat, I thought, this really could be sped up if. Their prices can vary depending on the type of garage and the hours you need to be. In each case, food was worth the line and the wait. I can think of 3 or 4 places we went and waited in line to eat. I just did a quick calculation and in Portland, I spent approximately 30% of my days asleep, 25% shopping/sighseeing/walking, 25% EATING, and 20% waiting in lines to do the aforementioned 25% eating. This is not an upscale place, just a place with good food. Also, the environment is very hole in the wallish. When we put water in our cups, there was a white residue floating on the water, which makes us think that their dishwasher isn't working properly. The one thing we did not like was the water glasses. The other ingredients seemed fresh and were well seasoned and complemented each other. They were soft, but firm, not at all flaky, if that is what you look for. The biscuits were not too fluffy, not too dense. It was delicious! I can't argue with the title of best biscuit in the US. My friend ordered biscuits with gravy and I had the Reggie Deluxe, which has fried chicken, bacon, gravy and an egg. There were a couple of gentlemen eating at an outside table near the front door as well as one man eating at a bench in the outdoor side seating area. I arrived at Pine State at approximately 7:15 am on a Monday morning.
Rise and Shine was also mentioned at about spot #10. My daughter who lives in Denver, near Rise and Shine Biscuits, a favorite spot for both of us, sent me an article that said that Pine State has the best biscuits in the US.
